On Wednesday, May 22, the Environmental Markets Association (EMA) brought together industry professionals representing municipalities, government, law firms and the trading community to discuss updates in the Carbon Market, Renewable Energy Credits and the emerging RINs Market at the offices of Shell in downtown Houston, Texas.
Over 35 attendees participated in this open discussion format. Mark Struk of Alpha Inception, Francisco Padua of Amerex and Dan Scarbrough of the IntercontinentalExchange provided attendees with an update on the California Carbon Market and presented results of the recent AB 32 Auction.
Next up, Joe Roenbeck of PSEG moderated a panel with Supria Ranade of BGC Partners and Eric Winter of Vitol. Panelists broke down each regional REC market from California to Texas and finally the Northeast and discussed the challenges each market faces.
The closing session was the eagerly anticipated RINs session. Jason Blusius of Shell Trading US, Bob Shults of Atlas Commodity Markets LLC and Dan Scarbrough of the IntercontinentalExchange provided an overview of the RINs terminology and how the market is currently being traded. Attendees participated in a lively debate regarding verification and how to avoid fraud in the market. This was the first time EMA has addressed RINs in a standalone session, but it will definitely not be the last.
A longtime EMA member said “This event was the best opportunity to learn and network with the key market players. The concentrated and focused audience allowed us to meet with people we needed to without pressure.”
The next EMA Regional Thought Leader Round Table will be held in October. EMA’s Annual Meeting will be held on September 25-27, 2013 at the Monte Carlo Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, NV.
Presentations are available to EMA Members via the Members Only website.
